Dr Miriam Stoppard has been at the forefront of the revolution in health information since she began her writing and broadcasting career in the early 1970s.Since that time she has become well known to millions all over the world as a leading authority on parenting, baby and child care, women's health, and many other topics from healthy eating to relationships and sex. She is a medical doctor (she studied medicine at the universities of London and Durham) and a parent herself - she has two sons of her own and four step-children - and is now also a grandparent. In 1998 she was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in recognition of her work in promoting healthcare information.

A Craft-Challenged Mum

I have always considered myself as being art and craft-challenged, although early in primary school I remember answering, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ with the words ‘an artist’. This flew in the face of the fact that I was neither good at, nor particularly interested in art. In Grade 6, I slaved over a stuffed toy that became affectionately known as the ‘elephant with one leg’. In high school, art classes were something to be endured rather than enjoyed, especially under the dubious tutorage of Mr Meerkin who was actually a graphic designer and liked our collage trees to be odd shades of purple and yellow rather than the more traditional green and brown.
