There is a new strain of flu virus called the H1N1 or swine flu virus. This virus is quickly spreading throughout the world, causing much worry and fear among the general population and the medical community. Over 90% of flu cases this year will be caused by the H1N1 strain of viru s. As with the most strains of the flu virus, young children, the elderly, those with comprised immune systems and pregnant women are especially at risk. The H1N1 strain of flu carries a greater risk of complications and death compared to the traditional flu. This is due to the fact that the H1N1 virus causes more severe respiratory complications much faster.

Have you found self-confidence a fragile, fickle friend? As humans, we seem to be constantly plagued by self-doubt and our belief in ourselves is only as strong as our last achievement or praise we received. As a parent and teacher, I’m keenly aware of this fact and how incredibly important it is for a child’s self-confidence to be meaningfully bolstered when they are young. When Megan Paynter * discovered she was six weeks pregnant she immediately thought back to what she had drank at her 30th birthday party a fortnight earlier. While she hadn’t had a ‘huge’ night like she used to have in her university days, she had definitely felt tipsy after enjoying some good wine with dinner that night. “We had been trying for a while and I had tried to be really healthy. Nothing had happened so I decided to let my hair down a little on my birthday. I felt so ashamed when I had to ask my doctor whether I could have damaged the baby by drinking that night.” Her GP reassured her that the risk that any harm had been done was low. “I stopped drinking for the rest of the pregnancy but I still worried about whether I had already done some damage,” she said. Her daughter was born healthy and there have been no signs of any delays in her development.
