 Errrgh…moan… groan...Mothers Day is almost here again! Why is it that as I sit and write today that I hear Julie Andrews singing in my head about “Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens” when I know, above all things, Mothers Day is certainly not one of my FAVOURITE THINGS!! Is this not a day when Mothers are to be pampered and placed upon fluffy pillowed pedestals and served breakfast in bed, with not an inkling of housework to be done in sight? Where grandmothers are smothered in smooches and love and children gleefully bake cakes (without making a mess) in pristine and glamorous kitchens? Mothers Day, to me, is more chaos than calm. It’s a day packed with organising for others (primarily my own mother) whilst my sisters sit back casually and watch the passing parade, pausing to comment momentarily that the cup of tea or coffee that I made for them - the beverage that goes with the slice or cake that I cooked - has gone cold. (‘Drink it faster then!’ says the evil me). On my wish list of things that might happen to me one day, is a Mothers Day, a Christmas Day, a Birthday or an Easter - in general any kind of family celebration where food is involved - where I may indeed be the one to sit back with my feet up, not have to wash dishes or cook, and be able to complain loudly about something that someone else has made for me. Oh, to have the option of complaining about burnt toast, or a cold cup of tea would be a wondrous event in my world. Once - it seems like a million years ago - in the days before my husband’s weekend roster ruled our lives, I do recall that I did get breakfast in bed. This small window of wonderful escapism, however has always been quickly over-ruled by the need to get up, prepare the lunchtime feast for others and rush, rush, rush. I really am at the stage where I do start to loathe these holiday festive days. I live in the hope that one day, my plotting stepdaughters will perhaps arrive dutifully on my doorstep on my birthday, Mothers Day or on Christmas morning with a basket of freshly baked goods, toddle to my kitchen and brew me a perfect coffee and sit and chat with me while the little ones gleefully amuse themselves (there’s that Disney Perfect Family fantasy again...) It seems to be a curse to be blessed with the ability to create a decadent meal or sweet morsel. So I turned the tables on the Easter Feast this year – and refused dutiful duty. Instead I took a Fish Pie to eldest stepdaughter’s house on Good Friday – ergo, she got to clean the mess afterwards! As for Mothers Day - this is a hurdle I’ve yet to face head on – so instead I shall focus on the beauty of this day. Fond memories of Mothers Day as a Mum include for me: my first as a pregnant mum-to-be and stepmum – the slippers I received. Pink, warm and fuzzy, they were actually worn at my wedding day as I waddled 37 weeks pregnant around my backyard, handing out the hors d'œuvres that I created for my wedding feast the day before! Other memories as the children grew include receiving the mandatory pre-school hand prints – which are still in the bottom of the Treasures Drawer and come out occasionally and make me weep like a crazed woman. And now there are the trinkets purchased with the $5 I provide for them to each buy me a gift from the Mothers Day Stall at school: the pink back scrubber in the shower, that I must use each time my Darling Son comes into the bathroom when I am in the shower; the matching photo frames on my bedside table with the drawings in them from my children that remind me that I am loved and appreciated; the heart locket that says ‘Mum, I love you’. I guess, on reflection, that the carry-on about the preparation for others is insignificant compared to the love that can be counted in the small handprints in the bottom of the Treasures Drawer. No matter where you are, or what you are doing, the love that surrounds you on Mothers Day morning is what matters. So, Julie Andrews, it may not be the raindrops on roses or the whiskers on kittens, but indeed the fluffy slippers and burnt toast from the kitchen, they may just be a few of my favourite things after all. Happy, happy Mothers Day to all, whatever you do.
