 The launch of Dainere Anthoney’s first book has created quite a stir. The book launch received television coverage on ABC's Stateline program and Dainere has been doing radio interviews, talking about her blog and meeting celebrities to get her message out in the public domain. There is nothing unusual about an author publicising their new book, but Dainere is no ordinary author. Seeing her book in print has literally been a dream come true for Dainere. You Have to go Through a Storm to Get to a Rainbow has been published by the Starlight Foundation, an organisation that grants wishes to seriously ill children. Just over a year ago, Dainere, then aged just 11, was diagnosed with a high risk, aggressive brain tumour, called Medulloblastoma. Emergency surgery, radiation and chemotherapy followed, starting Dainere on a path of medication, physiotherapy and constant pain. But instead of focusing on her illness and being consumed by the difficulties of day-to-day life, the plucky tween started her own blog, hoping to share her journey with other cancer sufferers. The intensive radiotherapy and extreme doses of chemotherapy left Dainere with cognitive problems, and both hearing and speech issues. Writing the blog became the way Dainere could express herself most clearly, and share her experiences. You Have to go Through a Storm to Get to a Rainbow is about Dainere’s blog, which simply and honestly tells the story of what it’s like for a 12 year old to live with a brain tumour. It seems bizarre to read about Dainere’s work on her school science project one moment, when in the next paragraph she talks about sleepless nights with excruciating pain in her legs, or how her eye starts to droop when she gets tired. If it sounds melodramatic, it’s not. Dainere’s natural optimistic hope shines through, as does her faith. Her purpose in writing the blog, and now also the book, is ‘to inspire and encourage other children who face a similar journey’. Proceeds from the book will go to the Sydney Children’s Hospital and help fund brain tumour research. Dainere’s altruistic motives combined with her tender years are proving magnetic to the media, and the spotlight is shining brightly on her. Despite all the attention, she is incredibly humble about what she has accomplished. “I don't really think I am anyone who is extra special. I am just telling my story and hoping to make a difference by inspiring, giving hope and telling the truth of what it is like to live with a brain tumour.” At the book launch, Dainere made a speech which reflects who she is as a person. “We are all given a path in our life, mine has not been easy but because of the love and support of my family and friends who I am so blessed to have around me, I have been able to find courage, strength and hope throughout my journey.” Hopefully, for this little ray of sunshine, there will be fewer storms and many more rainbows in the days to come.
