Every day, parents deal with the bumps, scrapes and falls that are a normal part of childhood. But what would happen at your house if your child or one of their friends was injured more severely? Do you have the basic fist aid knowledge required to save a life? The vast majority of the population recognizes that learning first aid is important, but the startling fact is that only 8% of Australians have a current first aid certificate. St John (NSW) CEO, Sean Gavin says many people put off doing a first aid course because the general business of daily life gets in the way. "You never know when you are going need these skills to help someone in need" he said. Well-known for their provision of first aid to the community, St John has launched an initiative called Everything Else Can Wait, to encourage people to learn basic first aid. Knowing what to do in a medical emergency can literally save lives. Quick thinking and using first aid skills can mean the difference between life and death to a person who is suffering an asthma attack, going into cardiac arrest or has been in an accident. Drowning, falls, poisoning and scalds are some of the accidents in the home that account for a large proportion of injuries to children. Prevention is always better than cure, but accidents can and do happen, even in the home of the most careful family. The best thing parents can do is keep their first aid skills up to date, to ensure they are able to cope with whatever situation their children manage to get themselves into. It’s important to remember that first aid skills can have long-term consequences, apart from just saving somebody’s life. Prof Fiona Wood states that the first few minutes after a burn occurs are crucial. "First aid can reduce the severity of a burn injury by up to 80%.” said Prof Wood. With prompt first aid, both the time taken to heal and any on-going treatment required are “significantly reduced.” St John runs a Caring for Kids first aid course, ideal for parents or carers of children from birth to age seven. The course takes one day and costs $100. Alternatively, book a course with other interested parents at your school or childcare facility, to ensure you have the skills needed to save a life.
