World Music Takes to the Solar Powered Stage

A one-of-a-kind solar powered stage will feature the best in world music at the Living Smart Festival at Speers Point Park on Sunday 12 September.

The Festival aims to raise awareness of sustainability issues through music, art, fashion, food, and market stalls. This event has attracted some nationally recognised acts, including bands Watussi, Dead Letter Chorus (indie/folk rock), King Tide (reggae), Black Bird Hum (acoustic) and music from One World DJ.  The headlining act, Watussi are a dynamic 8-piece band that play original Afro Colombian Rock and Roots.

Council’s Manager Sustainability, Dr Quentin Espey, said the festival would have 10 different areas in the park featuring entertainment and workshops throughout the day. “The centre stage will be 100% powered by solar panels and people will be able to see the energy generated,” Dr Espey said. “Celebrating sustainability and culture through world music is also important as we have much to learn from other cultures on how to live sustainably.  There will also be live performances from local school children who are celebrating sustainability through song and dance, and a local Lake Macquarie drum troupe performing traditional African music.”

Other entertainment includes expert speaker forums, mini workshops (such as native bee keeping, sustainable home maintenance, and weaving with native grasses), kids entertainment, creative activities, a wildlife show and a native plant giveaway.

The full program is now available on www.lakemac.com.au or by calling Council on 4921 0333.
