The research, drawing on data collected by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare, found a 57% increase in the odds of children of very obese mothers requiring asthma medications or being hospitalised for asthma between the ages of eight and ten years. Children of very obese mothers had the highest rate of asthma medications use (10.3%) but the study showed that even children whose mothers were slightly overweight also had an increased risk (7.8%). Researchers believe this could explain some of the increase in childhood asthma incidences in westernised countries over the past decades, as obesity has also increased over this time. While Dr Lowe states that the underlying mechanism to explain these results remains unclear, the study hypothesises that the link could be due to the child’s own risk of obesity, influencing the child’s immune system towards allergies during pregnancy, or by changing the metabolic balance of the child. Asthma rates in Australia are high when compared with international standards, with one in eight or nine children diagnosed with the disorder.
