Very soon the Hunter Wetlands Centre will be alive with an exciting new way to experience the wetlands at Shortland. East Coast Experiences will be running Segway Tours of the site from early January 2011.
Segways are ‘the’ way to get around and do your site seeing. Used in Paris, Munich, Chicago, Washington DC, Atlanta, San Francisco, Budapest, Vienna and Berlin and now the Hunter Wetlands Centre! The centre is the first to offer the Segway experience between Sydney and the Gold Coast. They are a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle. ‘The Segways are so much fun and can become very addictive, as Hunter Wetlands staff members will tell you!’ says Anna Ryan, Ecotourism Manager. ‘They fit well into the wetlands ethos; they are very ‘green’ as they are silent and will not spoil the serenity of the location for wildlife or others with noise or fumes. They will really add something new for tourists and locals to experience in a beautiful setting’. Each tour will run for around an hour and a half with an initial training session for first time users. Once people have done their training they will be issued with a Segway ‘licence’ so they don’t have to do the training again on later visits. The tours will run twice a day on weekends as well as once a day Thursdays and Fridays during school holiday periods. Minimum age for the tours is 10yrs (with height and weight requirements) but under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult.
Prices for Segway experiences cost $65 per person + wetlands entry fee (members; free entry).
