Review: In her introduction to Little Kitchen, Sabrina Parrini says writing the book was much cheaper than an around-the-world airline ticket, but just as satisfying. My family seems to agree. One evening I arrived home from work and the kids were cuddled up with Dad with the cookbook open in front of them, playing ‘Guess what country the food is from’. French onion soup? “France!” one of them shouted. They went through the book guessing countries as they went, and it was lovely to watch.
When I picked up the book to review it, I found a few dog-eared pages the children had already marked to cook from. Ten year old Jonti chose ‘Crispy coconut bananas’. It was rated ‘easy’, and he did the whole lot himself. The dish was absolutely beautiful, and we all enjoyed eating something Thai-inspired and exotic.
Little Kitchen includes a great range of lunches, dinners, desserts and cakes with accompanying pictures, and we found the rating system for ease of cooking accurate. Designed to suit 7-12 year olds, this book is a simple way to expose kids to the diversity of culinary cultures. It will be on hand at our place during school holidays, waiting for a rainy day when little chefs can work their magic.
