Review: This stunningly simple book celebrates the gift of generosity. Young children can sometimes give in such a sacrificial way that it brings tears to their parents’ eyes. And at other times, not so much. Young Ivy loves giving to her family, but whether or not her gifts are appreciated is another matter entirely. With her immediately identifiable, heart-warming illustrations, Freya Blackwood manages to capture the essence of a real family. With Mum feeding the baby on the lounge, to the breakfast dishes left on the table, the world she creates between the pages is one that a child can easily identify with.
Through the text, Blackwood has also captured a child’s natural desire to keep the good things and not want to share them. This is when the cycle of giving and receiving swings around, and it’s Ivy’s turn to enjoy some generosity of spirit. The board book design makes it easy to introduce this gentle, philanthropic tale to the very youngest readers. Newcastle’s Child has five copies of Ivy Loves To Give to give away.
